Understanding Immigration and Refugee Law on Relationship Breakdown:
E-Learning for Working with Women Leaving Abusive Relationships - ONLINE

This 2 part series of courses is designed to introduce participants to the most critical Immigration and Refugee Law issues for women leaving abusive relationships. It will provide participants with current, relevant and accessible legal information so that they can assist their clients in navigating the relevant legal, immigration and refugee systems.

Each of the 2 courses, Parts 1 and 2, are organized into 4 modules. Each module is comprised of a video lecture with accompanying power-point presentation. Additionally, resources and information, including relevant legislation, will be provided to supplement the learning of each module. Successful completion of the course will require participation in a weekly online discussion forum for the duration of the course as directed by the course instructor.

This course is designed to introduce participants to the most critical family law issues for women leaving abusive relationships. It will provide participants with current, relevant and accessible legal information so that they can assist their clients in navigating the legal system.

The course is organized into 5 modules. Each module is comprised of a video lecture synchronized with a Power-Point Presentation. Additionally, resources and information, including relevant legislation, will be provided to supplement the learning of each module. Successful completion of the course will require participation in a weekly online discussion forum for the duration of the course, as directed by the course instructor.

This course is targeted at anyone who provides service to women who may disclose abuse, such as counselors, social workers, educators, advocates, settlement workers, and group support workers, as well as those who provide direct service to women fleeing violence such as front-line crisis line or shelter workers.

1. To present information about family law that is relevant to and reflective of the needs of women leaving abusive relationships
2. To provide an intersectional analysis for the teaching that acknowledges the very different social locations of women, especially those women who are marginalized for one or more reasons and the impact this has on their interaction with the legal system and related services and supports
3. To provide legal information that is current, accurate and realistic
4. To make clear the difference between legal information and legal advice and to establish that this course and the information provided is NOT a replacement for legal advice and representation
5. To provide Increased knowledge and ability to access legal information as it applies to violence against women
6. To increase the effectiveness of participants in interventions in situations where woman abuse is suspected or has been identified

The full tuition for the Course is $295. (Plus GST).

Students must be in good financial standing with York University.
